For HC67 hydrants built prior to Oct 2001, an upgrade casing tube assembly with an O-ring rod seal may be required to keep a packing leak from frequently reoccurring. Manufactured date may be found on I.D. Ring under head nut or stamped on face of casting.

Call Woodford Mfg. for assistance in ordering appropriate length tube assembly (Part No. 560XX).

Shut off water supply and remove mixer handle and lock nut. Remove and discard existing tube assembly. IMPORTANT: Do not remove packing ring or rod assembly.

Carefully, so not to damage O-ring , insert new casing tube assembly over mixer rod. Tighten and replace lock nut and mixer handle. Note: Never use petroleum-based products to lubricate the O-ring.

Turn on water supply and check for leaks.

IMPORTANT: Check handle for proper orientation. Make sure that when the handle is turned to cold, only cold water is given and when turned to hot, only hot water is given. Adjust handle on the stem as necessary.

Remove the vacuum breaker and check to see if the hydrant flows water with the vacuum breaker removed. Inspect the vacuum breaker for obstruction or damage. If the hydrant still does not flow water with the vacuum breaker removed, remove the hydrant side rod assembly and turn on the water supply to flush the casing. If this does not fix the problem, follow instructions on how to repair stuck check valves below.

If the mixer body, inside the wall at the inlet, is exposed to freezing temperatures, the mixer body can freeze and extrude the check valve into the shuttle housing and it will not open to flow water. To service, you have to access the supply connection inside or behind the wall. Remove supply line and shuttle housing assembly. Free the check valve by dismantling or replace with new shuttle housing. Make sure mixer body and supply are in a non-freeze area.

Plunger (50250) is damaged and needs to be replaced. Follow instructions below on how to remove the operating rod.

If it’s a new installation, most likely caused by debris or an obstruction in the seat. Follow instructions below on how to remove the operating rod and inspect the plunger for damage and flush the casing before reassembling.

Make sure the hydrant is turned off completely and tight. If it still does not drain, the drain hole cavity in the casting and/or air vent hole in the stem screw may be blocked with debris or insect nest. Use a stiff wire to clear any obstructions.

To remove the operating rod from the hydrant, shut off the water supply and turn the stem counterclockwise to the full open position. Remove the head nut and stem screw. Remove the "C" washer from the stem screw and thread the stem screw back in the operating rod one or two turns. Use a pry bar to pry under the ledge of the stem screw, against the face of the hydrant, to pull the rod out of the hydrant. A damaged plunger may require a significant force to pull the rod free. Once the rod is out of the hydrant, inspect and/or replace the plunger, which is threaded on the rod. If the plunger rubber has come off the insert and is stuck inside the hydrant, a special plunger removal tool is available on loan from Woodford Mfg.
